SSimple and everyday gestures – like distributing hay for the horses or carrying out activities connected to a life in coexistence with Animality – are intertwined with the intense work of studies, reflections and elaborated insights: Francesco De Giorgio is in fact author of several scientific articles, popular articles, contributing to the criticism of anthropocentrism. Among his most recent writings, the Italian published Nel nome dell’Animalità (2018, in the name of Animality), The Cognitive Horse (2013) with José De Giorgio-Schoorl – translated in Italian and published as Comprendere il Cavallo (2015) and republished in the United States as Equus Lost? (2017) – and before that the Dizionario Italiano/Cavallo (2010).
To talk "in the name of Animality" means more than talking about animals. It requires questioning a system of oppression of the mind, of thoughts, of ideas - of nonhuman and human animals. In which the implications of entrapment in daily life are enormous.
In their provocative book, Francesco De Giorgio and José De Giorgio-Schoorl take us into a dimension, convincingly showing a way forward that acknowledges that a horse, when preserved to be themselves, is driven by his or her own inner motivation to explore and understand the world, including the relationship with humans. (Equus Lost? is the revised edition of The Cognitive Horse)
"Comprendere il Cavallo" represents the Italian translation of "The Cognitive Horse". Published in 2015 to inspire and as reference for students interested in developing a different knowledge and viewpoint regarding horses and other animals.
"This book can forever transform your world and most importantly the world of your horses. I personally feel that Francesco and José are simply remarkable in their ability to consider and live for the true perception of the other." The Cognitive Horse was published in a limited edition in 2013. The book has been republished in 2017 as Equus Lost?
The 'dictionary' was published in 2010, as a first step towards a broader diffusion of a change in perspective, to inspire people - with this popular work of writing - to step out of the equestrian box.
Francesco De Giorgio, has written a new, vigorous book. A collection of short inspiring stories, based on his background as evolutionary-biologist, but more in particular as activist, bringing stories stripped from speciesist layers, stripped from inhibiting labels, eye-opening and invigorating towards a possibility to change a value system, and a day-to-day practical evolution in our coexistence with other animals. The book has been first published in Italy in March 2018, it was translated in Spanish in December 2019 and in January 2020 the second Italian edition has been making its way to the bookstores. We hope to work with the Publishing House for an English tranlation in 2021.

“Francesco De Giorgio and José De Giorgio-Schoorl dare to now ask; What if much of what we think we know about horses is, in fact, wrong? What if the premise of herd hierarchy is a myth? What if “conditioning” the horse’s behavior in the ways we’ve grown accustomed is undercutting his potential for development? What if there is another—better—level of partnership to which we can aspire?”
“Their provocative book takes us into a dimension where we shed our assumptions of leadership, dominance, and control, convincingly showing a way forward that acknowledges that a horse, when allowed, is driven by his or her own inner motivation to explore and understand the world, including the relationship with humans.”
