Learning Animals
Our Mission

The Learning Animals studies / Animality studies, are part of the Sparta Association, a cultural non-profit aiming to create awareness for a paradigm-shift, in which animals (human included) are seen and understood as owners of their own experiences.

The Association develops cutting edge study programs, based on  Francesco De Giorgio’s socio-cognitive model, bringing:

• a transformational understanding of day-to-day coexistence with other animals within an antispeciesism framework
• improvement of daily quality of life
• the knowledge and practical know-how to bring about a development on an academic level for students interested in facilitating Animal Studies towards an evolved level, beyond the speciesist viewpoint.

At Sparta we work every day to enable this change, facilitating an evolved culture in knowledge and understanding of nonhuman animals – from their perspective.

Subjectivity comes first.
Restoring dignity to animality, taking into account and putting the subjectivities that compose it first, each with their own preferences, their own motivations, their own pleasures, their own expressiveness.

Cognition is to be understood in the way subjects are able to inform themselves.
It is not proof of how someone is able to react upon the world – what one is able to produce (as behavior).

Learning Animals - Animality Studies

Learning Animals brings a complete change in paradigm in the way human look at, and understand, nonhuman animals.

  • Study the human-nonhuman animal relationship from the perspective of nonhuman animals and the knowledge of their cognitive abilities as subjects (the Learning Animals Socio-Cognitive Learning model).
  • Study and develop an understanding of the perspective of nonhuman animals, animal minds and evolved animal ethics, in interaction with human, preserving a cognitive dynamic – instead of reacting upon the world – to preserve a reciprocal quality of life.
  • Understand subjectivity and agency, not as projection, but as compass in your own interaction, in every moment of life.

The Learning Animals studies offer a framework in which new values, knowledge and evolved animal ethics find their place. Students are therefor fully and individually supported in their understanding of the study-content and their personal growth. On-site groups are with a limited number of participants, online study possibilities are based on live-sessions, guarantying the learning as an active experience.

The studies are developed by Learning Animals and the knowledge, experience and passion of Dr. Francesco De Giorgio and José De Giorgio-Schoorl. Participants will learn how the behavioral approach, and result-oriented focus, can make room for subjectivity, social learning and sharing of experiences. Growing in a shared culture of emancipated minds.

100% animality

“Before any philosophical reflection, as well as before a political fight – both dimensions of undisputed value and meaning – Animality is a biological instance that unites all of us animals since the dawn of time of evolution.” Animality is universal. An innate call to cognitively experience the world in your own, subjective way.

– Francesco De Giorgio

“There are infinite worlds behind the world you see. You think you recognise something, but there are an infinity of other things to explore and to discover.”
Understanding subjectivity is a life-philosophy, part of every moment of life.

“Each of us, as a child, perceives the existence of this world in the world, where the relationship with animals is a natural and living flow, the dialogue is intense. It is not easy to continue to fuel this fire in the course of one’s existence: we tend to reify life, to dissect it, to look at the world and those who populate it as something to manage, structure, rationalise.”
[In the name of Animality, Nel nome dell’Animalità]

No one is born to become the object or the result of a behavioral protocol.

24/7 Experiencivore

The term “Experiencivore” was coined by Dr. Francesco De Giorgio (evolutionary-biologist and cognitive ethologist) to emphasize what all animals (human included) have in common; the need and pleasure to nourish and nurture themselves with cognitive experiences – Be informed by life – in opposition to the ecosystemic classification of species and mechanistic vision.
